Do you enjoy learning about the people, places, and events that make up the unique history of Cortland County? Then thank you for following Cortland County Historical Society—we love sharing life in the past lane with you! From archives to objects, we are the memory bank of Cortland County.
This photo is a great example of the treasures awaiting your discovery at CCHS! Betty Lou Weyant and Duke strike a pose as Little Red Riding Hood and the Big, Bad Wolf to advertise Grandmother’s Bread, an item sold by A&P stores across the region in the 1930s. By connecting the bread to a popular fairy tale, the marketing was genius!
This photo is part of a collection of the work of local photographer F.C. White, which was donated to the collection of the Historical Society by one of his relatives. Preserving local history is a true partnership—CCHS wouldn’t exist without the contributions of our community, and we exist to serve our community through the work we do to preserve the history of Cortland County.
As an independent organization, CCHS relies on memberships, donations, fundraising, gift shop sales, and occasional grants to fund our work. Right now, we could really use your help to raise a substantial part of our budget for 2025.
Each year, the Cortland Community Foundation holds a Philanthropy Challenge to help nonprofit organizations in our county raise much-needed funds. They offer prizes for the most money raised and for the greatest number of donations received. And each year, we’ve received terrific support from our community. Can we count on you this year?
The Philanthropy Challenge ends on November 15, and it’s a cinch to donate to the Cortland County Historical Society! You can make your donation either online or via snail mail (postmarked by November 15). Directions for both methods can be found here: https://cortlandcf.org/philanthropy-day/
If donating online, please be sure to indicate in the “Special Instructions” box that your donation is for the Cortland County Historical Society.
Note: To avoid fees being taken out of your donation, we recommend making your donation via snail mail. Make your check out to the Cortland Community Foundation and put Cortland County Historical Society in your memo line. Mail your check to: Cortland Community Foundation, PO Box 466, Cortland, NY 13045 before the November 15 deadline.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for your enthusiasm for local history! With your help, we will continue to share the stories of Cortland County!
